Plants for Winter Wet and hot summers!!

Clare Eaden • Aug 12, 2022

The new normal?

Here in Manchester I have been used to planting with a view to cope with clay soils and winter wet as my main problems. Yet as we reach over 30 Celsius again, there has to be a new dimension to my planting schemes.

Drought and heat tolerance! Its not something that I thought, I would have to deal with living and working in the North West of England. My own garden now floods in the Winter and is currently being baked to a crisp in the Summer heat. So what has worked for me? What has survived and thrived in both flood and heat?

Agapanthus seem to be resilient to the boggy winter. So too is the Iris lazica, Persicaria 'Fat Domino' Libertia ciliensis and that English favorite, Roses. Peonies work too and my Sanguisorba is hanging on in there.

I'm currently experimenting with some new additions too. Euphorbia palustris, Deschampsia 'Gold Tau'.

I will have to update you as to the outcomes of these new additions and some others in the pipeline. The weather is changing and we must adapt!!

This border is moist clay soil with occasional flooding. Its in semi shade, but there are lots of plants tat think its a lovely spot. Here you can see Hellebores, Brunnera and Astrantia combined with Dryopteris ferns, Actaea simplex ,Aconitum arendsii and Libertia chiliensis. They take you through the season with plenty of different textures, foliage colour and flowers.

Its been one of the busiest years yet for those businesses working in garden design, landscaping and planting. With everyone having their focus on their home patch there has been a huge demand to make our gardens the best and most relaxing they can be. Not only has Covid been difficult to deal with, the start of this year has seen huge turmoil in the horticulture sector, as the majority of our plants used in landscaping schemes come in from Europe. Despite all of these chalenges we have been working hard to create beautiful designs for homeowners across Manchester to make the most of thier outdoor spaces.

A wildlife pond was created for a client to encourage frogs, birds and insects into her back garden. We used decrative pebbles around the edge so the client could get access to the pond from all sides and still possition it in the corner of the garden.
